We were asked by one of our followers on Facebook, “How do caregivers handle emergencies or unexpected situations?”
1. WE STAY CALM
First thing we caregivers do in the state of emergency is to stay calm. This is part of our training. We know that keeping a cool head is crucial to making effective decisions in emergencies.
2. WE ASSESS THE SITUATION
Next, we quickly evaluate the severity and nature of the emergency. We don’t rush to take actions.
3. WE ENSURE SAFETY
For every emergency situation, we prioritize safety for both the care recipient and ourselves.
4. WE CALL FOR HELP
In emergency situations, we have to contact emergency services if needed.
5. WE FOLLOW EMERGENCY PLANS
Due to our training, we have emergency plans. So, we refer to any existing emergency plans or protocols in situations like this.
6. WE ADMINISTER FIRST AID
We provide immediate medical assistance.
7. WE COMMUNICATE CLEARLY
As at when due and necessary, we keep family members and relevant parties informed.
8. WE KEEP IMPORTANT INFORMATION HANDY
For those registered with Abic Healthcare Services, of course, we have access to medical records, contact information, and medications. These help us to take necessary actions.
9. WE MAINTAIN DOCUMENTATION
We also record details of the emergency and actions taken. This is very important.
10. STAY FLEXIBLE
We are also trained to be flexible. We easily adapt to changing circumstances as necessary.
11. WE COMFORT THE CARE RECIPIENT
At Abic Healthcare Services, we make sure we offer reassurance and support.
12. WE DELEGATE TASKS (IF NECESSARY)
We work with different qualified medical professionals. In emergencies, if it is necessary, we assign roles to others to assist in managing the situation.
13. MANAGE STRESS
In emergencies, as caregivers, we could also experience stress. We make sure we take moments to breathe and stay focused.
14. STAY INFORMED
As situations unfold, and new information emerges regarding a particular emergency, we keep updated on new developments or changes in the situation.
15. FOLLOW UP
Finally and not the least of what we do in emergencies, after the emergency has passed, we follow up with appropriate medical or support services as needed.
